The Power of Scripture in the Dark Night of the Soul
The Power of Scripture in the Dark Night of the Soul

Several years ago, there was a movie that came out called The Book of Eli that had an impactful scene towards the end. I am sure almost everyone has seen this movie, so I am not spoiling anything.

Eli carries the last known copy of the Bible, but more importantly, he has memorized it. When others are looking for a physical Bible, he quotes Psalm 119:11: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

The idea of hiding God’s word in one’s heart becomes literal—he internalizes Scripture so completely that even if the physical book is lost, the Word lives on through him. It’s a powerful moment that underscores the film’s themes of faith, preservation, and divine purpose. Eli isn’t just protecting a book—he’s safeguarding a truth that’s meant to be lived, not just read. This verse is deeply symbolic in the film.

I too have memorized many verses in my lifetime. Much like we reach for ointment when sunburned or Advil when we have a headache, there are verses that I have on the ready when my soul and mind needs them.

Unexplainable Depression:

Psalm 34:17–18
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

When fear and despair creep in:

When you need rest and refuge:

When you long for renewal:

When hope feels distant:

Maybe you have a list of your own, I would love to hear them! Send your verses or your thoughts to thedoc@heartfeltguidance.com
